11 incoming freshmen win USA Volleyball junior national championship

Eleven incoming Division I-II freshmen men’s volleyball players ended their junior careers as national champions.

Balboa Bay 18 Quiksilver swept Santa Monica Beach Club 25-17, 25-23 to win the 18-Open Division championship at the 2011 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Balboa Bay, a volleyball club located in Southern California, went undefeated and lost one set in its 11 matches during the four-day tournament. Eleven of the 12 players on the Balboa Bay roster had committed to a Division I-II men’s volleyball team prior to the national tournament.

UC Irvine hopes to increase number of teams at its 2011 international tournament

UC Irvine is exploring the possibility of expanding the amount of teams participating in its international preseason tournament this fall.

Anteaters head coach John Speraw said Tuesday that it is likely the UC Irvine International Volleyball Tournament will be more than a five-team field, if it is financially possible for the school.

“If you bring in more teams it costs more. We have begun to develop a reputation overseas with this tournament and it’s a nice event that teams want to play in,” Speraw said. “We have had more teams request to play this year. I don’t how our final budget is going to look, and we haven’t determined the final number of teams yet.”

U.S. Men’s Junior National Team roster announced for 2011 World Championship

Fifteen current college men’s volleyball players will play for the United States in the World Championship.

USA Volleyball announced Monday its U.S. Men’s Junior National Team 12-player roster and seven alternates for the 2011 FIVB Men’s Junior (U-21) World Championship in Brazil.

“Most of our players have played a major role on their collegiate teams and that experience should carry over quite well for us,” head coach John Hawks said in statement released Monday. “I feel like we are not going to be physically outmatched by anyone. This year’s team has tremendous depth and we can start a wide variety of lineups and still maintain a high level of cohesion on the court.”

AVCA releases 2011 high school boy’s volleyball All-American team

Twenty incoming freshmen were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Senior All-American Team on Wednesday.

UC Irvine, Loyola and Pepperdine led all teams with two players selected as a First-Team All-American. Cal State Northridge also had a First-Team and Second-Team All-American selection, while UC San Diego had two players named Second-Team All-Americans.

USC, Ohio State, Lewis, BYU, Juniata and Princeton each had one incoming recruit selected as an All-American.

Off the Fan Choice Player of the Year: Championship match

Fans nationwide will get to decide Monday if UC Irvine outside attacker Cory Yoder or Loyola outside attacker Mike Bunting will be the 2011 Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

Yoder and Bunting advanced in the championship match of the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament, a competition that lets the fans determine the winner through online voting.

The online voting for the national championship match will end at 11:59 p.m. (EST) Monday.

The Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year is a six-round 64-player bracket tournament pitting some of best Division I-II men’s volleyball players in head-to-head matchups. The player who received the most online votes in their match advanced to the next round.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year: National Semifinals

Off the Block created the bracket and seeded 64 of the best Division I-II men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to you determine who should be the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

After the first four rounds, four players remain in the only national player of the year award tournament that is completely determined by the fans.

The online voting for the two Final Four matches will end at 11 p.m. Saturday. The winners will advance to the championship on Monday.
