Stanford, Rutgers-Newark receive AVCA award for academic excellence

Two NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams received a team national academic honor.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Thursday that Rutgers-Newark and Stanford earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 season.

To be eligible for this award a college or high school volleyball team must have at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or have a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale.

NCAA penalizes Rutgers-Newark with scholarship reduction for low APR score

For the second conseuctive seaosn, Rutgers-Newark will lose almost half a scholarship because of its Academic Progress Rate score.

The Scarlet Raiders were penalized a 0.43 scholarship reduction after scoring a 892 out of a possible 1,000 points in the annual APR report that the NCAA released Tuesday.

The APR measures a team’s academic scholastic performance during a four-year period based on the retention and eligibility of each athlete on scholarship. Teams with less than 925 score have the potential to receive NCAA penalties ranging from losing scholarships to a reduction in practice time.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year: Round 1

Off the Block created the bracket and seeded 64 of the best college men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to you determine who should be the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

The Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament is the only contest that allows the fans to completely determine who should be the national player of the year.

The online voting for the 32 first-round matches will end at 11 p.m. Wednesday. The winners will advance to the second round Thursday.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament to begin Wednesday

The Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year will begin Wednesday, giving fans from around the nation the opportunity to determine the best college men’s volleyball player during the 2011 season.

Off the Block has created a six-round 64-player bracket tournament matching up the best men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to the fans through online voting to determine who should be the winner of each match-up.

Every round will last one day with the polls closing at 11 p.m. (EST). The player with the most votes when the polls close will advance to the next round.

Conference tournament men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

From coast to coast the men’s volleyball conference tournaments are in full swing tonight.

Penn State on the East Coast looks to move one win closer to clinching its 13th consecutive EIVA title and a spot in the Final Four. In addition, the two Cinderellas of the West Coast, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara, play with a chance to advance to the MPSF Tournament championship match.

The winners of these semifinals matches tonight will play in their conference tournament championship match Saturday.

Conference tournament men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

The madness of April is officially upon us.

Nine of the 10 conference tournament quarterfinal matches in the EIVA, MIVA and MPSF will be played tonight with the winners advancing to the semifinals while the losers’ seasons will likely be finished. These postseason matches to also feature eight of the top 10 ranked teams, including No. 2 BYU and No. 3 Stanford who are battling for the lone at-large bid to the Final Four.

2011 All-EIVA teams released

For the fourth consecutive season, a Penn State men’s volleyball player was the named the EIVA Player of the Year.

Outside attacker Joe Sunder was named the Uvaldo Acosta EIVA Player of the Year on Thursday after leading the conference and being third in the nation with a 4.63 kills per game average.

Sunder was also one of six Penn State players named an All-EIVA team, which were released along with the player of the year award.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

With no MPSF matches tonight, the focus of men’s volleyball is solely on the EIVA and MIVA.

No. 7 Penn State and Ball State highlight the schedule tonight as they renew their non-conference rivalry that historically use to determine who was the best volleyball team east of the Mississippi River. In addition, Loyola is hoping to make history this weekend, while Princeton is looking to avoid history tonight.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

The end of March madness has the potential to be the most madding.

Two matches between teams ranked in the top 10 are the main features of tonight’s men’s volleyball schedule. Other matches around the nation, though, as provide some intrigue as No. 9 Penn State returns to place where it suffered one of its biggest upsets in program history and Hall of Fame coach Arnie Ball makes his third attempt at a career milestone.
