Opposite Maurice Torres had both a match-high 15 kills and three aces as Puerto Rico defeated the United States 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14 in the Pan American Cup quarterfinals on Friday in Gatineau, Canada. Three current college men’s volleyball players competing as amateurs came up short of winning the qualification tournament and making the main draw for one of the nation’s biggest professional beach volleyball events this year.
The pair of Pepperdine setter Robert Mullahey and Penn State incoming freshman outside attacker Will Bantle, along with Hawai’i outside attacker Colton Cowell and his partner all won multiple matches at the AVP Hermosa Beach Open on Thursday in Hermosa Beach, California.
