The 2013 college men’s volleyball season begins this week and there are plenty of intriguing non-conference matches to keep an eye on throughout entire regular season.

Everything from early season matches that could be previews of Final Four matches to underdog teams traveling out west looking for a signature victory highlights the non-conference lineup this year.

Penn State, UCLA, Ohio State to play in 2013 Outrigger Invitational

Penn State after a one-year hiatus will return to Hawaii to open its season at the annual Outrigger Invitational.

The Nittany Lions return to the island was made official last week as Hawai’i unveiled its 2013 schedule and announced that Penn State, Ohio State and UCLA will play in the school’s home tournament in January 2013.

Top 5 storylines to follow at the Outrigger Invitational

There are more than enough intriguing storylines this year for one of the oldest and most prestigious non-conference tournaments in NCAA men’s volleyball history.

Hawai’i, No. 9 Lewis, Springfield and No. 3 UCLA will begin play today at the three-day Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu. Each team will play each other once in tournament’s round-robin format and will conclude with a nationally televised match between UCLA and the host school Hawai’i.

Hawai’i releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

A difficult six-week conference stretch and playing host to its annual Outrigger Invitational highlights the 2012 Hawai’i regular season schedule that the team released Monday.

Hawai’i finished last season in fifth place in the MPSF and lost in the first round of the conference tournament. The Warriors return four starters for the upcoming season and also have incoming freshman outside attacker JP Marks, who played for the Germany Junior and Youth National teams.

Three Hawai’i matches to be nationally televised in upcoming season

Three Hawai’i home matches at the beginning of the 2012 season will be nationally televised.

The Hawai’i athletics department announced Tuesday that its men’s volleyball team’s matches against UC San Diego and UCLA in January will air live on Fox College Sports.

Hawai’i will open its season with a two-match series against UC San Diego on Jan. 5-6 with both matches being televised. In addition, Hawai’i will play UCLA to conclude its home non-conference tournament, the Outrigger Invitational, on Jan. 14.

UCLA releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

The final regular season schedule in Hall of Fame coach Al Scates’ 50-year tenure at UCLA was released Wednesday.

The only coach in UCLA men’s volleyball history announced in May that he would retire at the end the 2012 season. Sactes and the Bruins enter the upcoming season with six returning starters after finishing last season in eighth place in the MPSF and losing in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

Lewis releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

Six non-conference matches against teams likely to be nationally ranked highlights Lewis’ 2012 season as the team Wednesday released its regular season schedule for the upcoming season.

Lewis finished last season No. 13 in the final coaches poll and lost to the NCAA champions Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals. Flyers coach Dan Friend has six starters returning for last year’s team, including First-Team All-MIVA outside attacker Jay Petty.

UCLA, Lewis, Springfield in, Penn State out for 2012 Outrigger Invitational

One of the biggest men’s volleyball non-conference tournaments will have a different look from previous seasons in 2012.

Hawai’i coach Charlie Wade said Thursday that UCLA, Lewis and Springfield College will play in the 2012 Outrigger Invitational in January. It is the first time in the 17-year history of the Hawai’i home tournament that Springfield College will play in it and the first time for Lewis since 2005.

“There is no shortage of teams that want to come out here and play in Hawaii,” Wade said. “It’s going to be fun to play them, and it’s going to be fun for our fans to see some nice teams come out that they don’t normally get to see.”
