EIVA announces Player of the Year, all-conference teams

For the first time in more than five years, a non-Penn State player has earned EIVA Player of the Year of the Year honors.

George Mason outside attacker Mark Jones and Penn State outside attacker Aaron Russell were selected as the 2013 Uvaldo Acosta Memorial EIVA Co-Players of the Year, the league announced Friday afternoon.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year: First Round

Off the Blocked selected and seeded the 65 players in a bracket, and now it is up to the fans to determine who should win the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

The Fan Choice Player of the Year recognizes the best individual performances from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players during the season and gives volleyball fans from around the world the chance decide the winner through online voting.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

It’s the final weekend of the regular season, and with that may finally come clarity to the conference tournament brackets.

No. 8 Ohio State will play IPFW in its conference season finale with a chance to win the MIVA regular season championship. In addition, No. 4 BYU and No. 7 Penn State will open a two-match non-conference series with signficant NCAA Tournament implications.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

Less than a month from the start of the conference tournaments, teams will be jockeying for postseason seeding in several critical match-ups this weekend in college men’s volleyball.

No. 3 BYU will attempt to take sole possession of first place in the MPSF as it travels to play No. 9 Long Beach State. In addition, Grand Canyon will try to continue its shocking run through the MIVA and upset Loyola in a two-match weekend series.

D-II men’s volleyball teams ineligible for new NCAA scholarship benefits

Five Division II men’s volleyball teams, despite playing in a conference with Division I schools, would be prohibited from providing an additional $2,000 to its full-ride scholarship athletes.

The NCAA informed Off the Block via email Thursday that its newly adopted scholarship policy only applies to Division I schools, and Division II schools regardless of conference affiliations would be ineligible from giving their players the extra benefit.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted last week to allow schools to provide full-scholarship athletes up to an extra $2,000 for cost-of-living expenses. Schools would not be required to add the benefit, but the NCAA requested that conferences consider common applications.

Rutgers-Newark hires NJIT assistant Trevino as new head coach

Pedro Trevino tenure has an assistant coach for a Division I-II team was short before he got a head coaching position.

The Rutgers-Newark athletics department announced Wednesday that Trevino was hired as its men’s volleyball head coach — less than two months after he was named an assistant coach at NJIT.

“I really appreciate [Rutgers-Newark athletics director Mark] Griffin giving me the opportunity to take over the program,” Trevino said in a statement. “My goal is to build off of what the team accomplished last year and maximize the team’s potential to get to the EIVA Finals.”
