My men’s volleyball media poll ballot

There will not be any type of split national champion in men’s volleyball this season.

Ohio State received every first-place vote to be ranked No. 1 in the final men’s volleyball media poll released Tuesday.

Ohio State defeated UC Santa Barbara in five games in the NCAA championship match to become first MIVA team to win a national title in the 42 years of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes jumped up six spots to No. 1 from the last media poll that was released at the end of the regular season.

No team dropped out the top 10 media poll this week but there was a significant amount of movement.

The bottom six teams all moved spots in this week’s poll with Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara having the biggest leaps. Hawai’i jumped up three spots to No. 5 after winning a home match against No. 1 USC, while UC Santa Barbara climbed four spots to No. 6 following its upset victory against No. 3 Stanford.

The bottom of the top 10 media poll remains a revolving door and weekly struggle for this voter.

With all the upsets and top 10 teams losing this week, there were about four teams — Loyola, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State and Hawai’i — all vying for the final three spots in the poll. This was without a doubt one of the more difficult voting ballots to compile this entire season as I spent a significant amount of time looking at multiple factors and stats to create a ranking that made sense.

The madness of March hit men’s volleyball this weekend and the aftermath is now being felt in the polls.

Three top 10 ranked teams dropped in the media poll after losing matches, including BYU and Stanford that both lost to unranked teams. In addition, several teams made significant gains in the poll with Ohio State receiving its highest national ranking in program history at No. 2 and Hawai’i jumping four spots to No. 6.

There isn’t a whole lot of question about who are the top four teams. USC, Stanford, BYU and Long Beach State have clearly established themselves as the four best teams in the nation during the first month of the season.

However, the question who are the other six teams remains unsettled.

Some teams such as a Ohio State have shown significant improvement since the start of the season, while teams like UCLA have struggled in recent weeks. These streaks continue to create a fluid voting ballot with the final few slots every week in the ballot feeling like a revolving door of teams.
