Outside attacker Greg Petty had a career-high 18 kills as No. 9 Lewis swept No. 8 UC Irvine 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 in its season-opener Monday in Irvine, California.
The Flyers in the non-conference victory out-hit the Anteaters .430 to .265, including having .538 a match-high attack percentage in the second game. There will be a new team at one of the most prestigious non-conference tournaments in college men’s volleyball next season.
UC Irvine will make its first appearance in program history at the upcoming Outrigger Invitational, which had its four-team tournament field unveiled earlier this week.

It didn’t come easy, but No. 1 UC Irvine started its national title defense with a victory.
The two-time defending NCAA champions UC Irvine rallied from a one-deficit to defeat No. 10 Lewis 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-23 on Wednesday in Romeoville, Ill., to open the 2014 college men’s volleyball season.

It’s an extremely quiet preseason for a two-time defending NCAA champion, but that’s just the way UC Irvine prefers it this fall.
UC Irvine coach David Kniffin said Tuesday in an interview with Off the Block that he opted to scale back his team’s preseason schedule to give his players more rest following their postseason run last season.
