Spring break is finally here and that means a big weekend of non-conference matches in college men’s volleyball.

No. 3 Penn State looks to rebound from its first loss in more than a month as plays No. 5 USC tonight in Los Angeles, while IPFW hopes to beat No. 10 Long Beach State and send a message that it belongs among the nationally ranked teams.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

It’s the start of the second half of the season, and it’s a must-win day for several teams with the conference tournaments looming.

No. 6 BYU will look to stay in the top four of the MPSF standings as it plays host to No. 9 Pepperdine. In addition, Hawai’i will attempt to stay in contention for a spot in the conference tournament as it travels to play No. 5 USC.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

It could be a night of firsts in college men’s volleyball.

Lees-McRae and Springfield will meet in the Morgan Classic championship match as they both attempt to win the tournament for the first time in their program history. In addition, UC San Diego will try to do something it has never accomplished in its history: defeat No. 4 BYU.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

For the first time this season, a large chunk of the men’s volleyball national spotlight shifts away from California for the night.

No. 1 BYU opening a two-match series against No. 6 USC in Provo, Utah, and No. 5 Penn State going on the road to play Loyola highlights several of the big matches tonight outside of California. Inside the Golden State, though, two top-five ranked play each other No. 3 UCLA plays host to No. 4 Stanford.

Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

And just in case you didn’t get enough top 10 teams play each other Friday, there are more of these matches today.

Seven of the top 10 ranked teams will be in action Saturday. Highlighting these matches is battle between the two undefeated teams — No. 2 BYU and No. 3 UC Irvine — in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational championship match.

A new season in college men’s volleyball also means plenty of new players — freshmen and transfer students — for each team in the nation.

The five teams that could surprise everyone in 2012

There are some teams that no one is talking about but could surprise people by the end of the season.

Whether it was UC Santa Barbara’s run to the NCAA championship match last season or Juniata reaching the EIVA championship match in 2009, there are always men’s volleyball teams each season that pleasantly surprise everyone in the nation.

Several teams last season that did not reach their conference tournament or finished outside of the national rankings could have a big season in 2012.

Dunlap dominant, UCLA wins twice at home preseason tourney

All-MPSF middle attacker Wes Dunlap had a team-high combined 27 kills as UCLA won both its matches on the final day of its preseason home tournament.

Dunlap in the Bruins’ opening match led the team with 14 kills to help UCLA defeat UC Santa Barbara 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 on Saturday morning at the SAC Tournament.
