BYU vs. UC Irvine draws best attendance for neutral site NCAA finals since 1999

Both the BYU and UC Irvine fans turned out for the national championship and helped it become one of the highest attended finals in recent history.

The No. 2 seed UC Irvine swept the No. 1 seed BYU to repeat as national champions Saturday at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in front of a crowd of 6,295 people — the highest attended NCAA championship match since 1999 that didn’t feature the host school playing in the match.

Zot, Zot again: UC Irvine shocks BYU to repeat as NCAA champions

All the talk going into the NCAA Tournament championship was the star power both teams had at outside attacker, but it was a career performance from a middle attacker that made all the difference for UC Irvine.

Scott Kevorken had a match-high 11 blocks and .600 attack percentage as the No. 2 seed UC Irvine swept the No. 1 seed BYU 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 on Saturday in Los Angeles to repeat as NCAA champions.

NCAA semifinal attendance takes hit without UCLA in tournament

The UCLA athletics department informed Off the Block on Friday that 2,935 people were in attendance for both men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament semifinal matches — the lowest semifinal attendance since 2007.
