UC Irvine hopes to increase number of teams at its 2011 international tournament

UC Irvine is exploring the possibility of expanding the amount of teams participating in its international preseason tournament this fall.

Anteaters head coach John Speraw said Tuesday that it is likely the UC Irvine International Volleyball Tournament will be more than a five-team field, if it is financially possible for the school.

“If you bring in more teams it costs more. We have begun to develop a reputation overseas with this tournament and it’s a nice event that teams want to play in,” Speraw said. “We have had more teams request to play this year. I don’t how our final budget is going to look, and we haven’t determined the final number of teams yet.”

NCAA report: Men’s volleyball brings in more money than women’s volleyball

Men’s volleyball teams at top Division I schools are generating more revenue for their athletics department than women’s volleyball teams, according to a recent NCAA report.

The NCAA revenue and expense report released this week showed men’s volleyball teams from schools with a team in the Football Bowl Subdivision had a generated revenue median of $162,000 during the 2009-10 fiscal year. The amount is more than double the generated revenue median for women’s volleyball teams from the same type of schools.

Among the items used to determine a team’s generated revenue for the report included ticket sales, alumni contributions, television and radio contracts and other royalties.

Setter Kehoe wins Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year award

For the first time in school history, a volleyball player has been named the best male athlete at Ohio State.

Senior setter Steven Kehoe was named the Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year on Wednesday after leading the Buckeyes to their first NCAA championship in program history.

Kehoe finished the season fifth in the nation with a 11.56 assists per game average and was selected as the MIVA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The three-year starter was also named to the AVCA First-Team All American.

U.S. Men’s Junior National Team roster announced for 2011 World Championship

Fifteen current college men’s volleyball players will play for the United States in the World Championship.

USA Volleyball announced Monday its U.S. Men’s Junior National Team 12-player roster and seven alternates for the 2011 FIVB Men’s Junior (U-21) World Championship in Brazil.

“Most of our players have played a major role on their collegiate teams and that experience should carry over quite well for us,” head coach John Hawks said in statement released Monday. “I feel like we are not going to be physically outmatched by anyone. This year’s team has tremendous depth and we can start a wide variety of lineups and still maintain a high level of cohesion on the court.”

AVCA releases 2011 high school boy’s volleyball All-American team

Twenty incoming freshmen were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Senior All-American Team on Wednesday.

UC Irvine, Loyola and Pepperdine led all teams with two players selected as a First-Team All-American. Cal State Northridge also had a First-Team and Second-Team All-American selection, while UC San Diego had two players named Second-Team All-Americans.

USC, Ohio State, Lewis, BYU, Juniata and Princeton each had one incoming recruit selected as an All-American.

Hawai’i assistant coach resigns to become head coach at Concordia

A Hawai’i men’s volleyball assistant coach has resigned to become the head coach for a NAIA women’s volleyball team.

The Hawai’i athletics department announced Wednesday that associate coach Dan Fisher is leaving the university to become the head coach at Concordia University.

Fisher has been on the Hawai’i coaching staff since Charlie Wade became the team’s head coach for the 2010 season.

EIVA to reduce conference tournament to 4 teams starting next season

The EIVA Tournament will be more difficult for teams to make starting in 2012.

The EIVA voted at its annual league meeting to reduce its conference tournament from seven to four teams next season.

“This puts an emphasis on the regular season,” Penn State coach Mark Pavlik said. “You got to be at your best through the EIVA regular season schedule to be in the top four and hopefully that creates competition among the eight teams.”

Ohio State’s Hanson named 2011 AVCA National Coach of the Year

Add another national award for Ohio State this season.

Ohio State coach Pete Hanson was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Men’s National Coach of the Year on Wednesday after leading the Buckeyes to their first NCAA championship in program history.

Ohio State defeated UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA championship match to become the first MIVA team to legally win a national title since volleyball became an NCAA sanctioned sport in 1970. The 28-year head coach also guided the Buckeyes to their fourth consecutive conference championship — the first time a program has won four consecutive MIVA titles since Ball State in the 1960s.

NCAA penalizes Rutgers-Newark with scholarship reduction for low APR score

For the second conseuctive seaosn, Rutgers-Newark will lose almost half a scholarship because of its Academic Progress Rate score.

The Scarlet Raiders were penalized a 0.43 scholarship reduction after scoring a 892 out of a possible 1,000 points in the annual APR report that the NCAA released Tuesday.

The APR measures a team’s academic scholastic performance during a four-year period based on the retention and eligibility of each athlete on scholarship. Teams with less than 925 score have the potential to receive NCAA penalties ranging from losing scholarships to a reduction in practice time.

Loyola’s Bunting wins 2011 Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year award

Loyola outside attacker Mike Bunting is the inaugural winner of the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

Bunting defeated UC Irvine outside attacker Cory Yoder on Monday in the championship match of the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament, a competition that lets the fans determine the winner through online voting.

More than 1,000 votes were cast in the championship match with Bunting receiving 63.9 percent of the vote to beat Yoder 818-463.
