The top two teams in the Big West standings are atop of a newest bracketology metric.

Long Beach State and Hawai’i received the highest rankings in the season’s first KPI that was released on Tuesday.

The KPI is a ranking system that evaluates every match result on a scale with the best positive result receiving about a 1.0 score and the worst possible result garnering about a negative-1.0 score. Among the variables used to determine a match result score includes opponent’s winning percentage, opponent strength of schedule, point differential, match location.

Long Beach State earned the No. 1 ranking with a .642 KPI percentage – edging out No. 2 Hawai’i by .024 percentage points. Both the Beach and the Rainbow Warriors are the only teams with more than a .550 KPI percentage.

Four Big West teams are in the top seven of the KPI with UC Irvine at No. 4 and UC San Diego at No. 7.

UCLA at No. 3 and USC at No. 6 are the top two MPSF schools in the KPI rankings. Loyola also is the highest ranked MIVA team at No. 5.

This is the second season the NCAA men’s volleyball committee has included KPI as a criteria category to determine the NCAA Tournament field.

The KPI is an enhanced selection criteria compared to the current RPI system. The RPI rankings does not factor items like margin of victory or match location into its mathematical equation.

The KPI will be updated daily throughout the college men’s volleyball season.
