All the service pressure from No. 14 Lewis resulted in an upset win.
Pin-hitters Max Roquet and Oguzhan Oguz each had a match-high three aces as Lewis swept No. 8 Penn State 25-15, 25-15, 25-22 on Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois.
The Flyers finished the non-conference match with eight aces – five more aces than the Nittany Lions.
Setter Tyler Morgan guided the offense to out-hit Penn State .369 to .236. In addition, Lewis in the second game committed zero errors and had a match-high .667 attack percentage.
Outside attacker Daniel Haber in the victory had a team-high 11 kills on a .350 attack percentage. Roquet added seven kills with four of those kills coming in the second game.
Oguzhan, who transferred from Hawai’i to Lewis in the offseason, contributed eight kills on a .412 attack percentage. The opposite also did not commit an attack error in the final two games and finished the match with one error.
Along with the offensive performance, Oguzhan had back-to-back aces in the third game.
Penn State outside attacker Will Kuhns finished with a match-high 13 kills on a .500 attack percentage. Kuhns, though, was the only Nittany Lions to have both more than five kills and more than a .200 attack percentage.
This is the first time that Lewis has defeated Penn State since beating the Nittany Lions in the 2021 NCAA Tournament opening round.
Penn State with this loss ends its Midwest road trip winless. The team lost its season opener to No. 12 Loyola on Friday.
