What to know: First place in Pool C and a chance to become a near lock for a quarterfinals berth is on the line for the United States as it plays Germany in pool-play. The United States enters its second of three pool-play matches after sweeping Argentina in its Olympic opener. Former USC setter and three-time Olympian Micah Christenson guided the U.S. offense to a .500 attack percentage against Argentina. The United States also hit a match-best .632 and committed one attack error in its third-game victory to complete the sweep. Former Penn State outside attacker Aaron Russell led all players with 13 kills on a .600 attack percentage, while former Long Beach State outside attacker TJ DeFalco added nine kills and hit .667. DeFalco also had 18 kills in a four-game Volleyball Nations League victory against Germany earlier this summer. The United States is currently in sole possession of first place in Pool C – one point ahead of second-place Germany. Germany upset Japan in five games in its pool-play opener on Saturday. Gyorgy Grozer led Germany with 15 kills and had both a match-high five blocks and four aces against Japan. Grozer in the most recent Volleyball Nations League meeting against the United States finished with 14 kills and was limited to a .229 attack percentage.
