What to know: The first day of the Olympics will provide the United States with an opportunity at Olympic redemption. The United States will open pool-play against Argentina – the team that the United States lost to in the 2020 pool-play finale to be eliminated from medal contention. That loss resulted in the United States failing to advance out of pool-play for the first time since the 2000 Olympics. The United States since the last Olympics has rebounded and won the silver medal at both the 2022 and 2023 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Nine of the 12 players on the U.S. roster have previous Olympic experience with former Penn State opposite Matt Anderson appearing in a team-high fourth Olympics. Former Penn State outside attacker Aaron Russel also returns to the Olympics after missing the last games because of an injury. Argentina enters this Olympics after winning the bronze medal at the 2020 games and most recently reaching the quarterfinals of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League. Argentina middle attacker Agustin Loser led the Volleyball Nation League with 34 blocks and added 75 kills on a .455 attack percentage.
