What to know: Life without setter Jakob Thelle, the 2023 National Player of the Year, begins for Hawai’i. The defending Big West champions, though, will have multiple highly touted options to insert into its starting lineup for its season opener against Loyola. The Rainbow Warriors in the offseason added both Tread Rosenthal and Kevin Kauling to compete for the starting setter position. Rosenthal, a member of the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team, graduated high school early to join Hawai’i for the 2024 season. The freshman was the most valuable player at the U19 Pan American Cup during the summer as the United States won the gold medal. Rosenthal also guided the United States to a fourth-place finish at the FIVB U19 World Championship in August. Kauling, a former All-American setter, transferred to Hawai’i after graduating from Lewis. Lewis utilized a 6-2 offensive system for part of last season, and Kauling had limited playing time in the second half of the season. Kauling in 2021 was second in the nation with a 10.84 assists per game average and helped lead Lewis to the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Despite needing to replace Thalle, Hawai’i returns two All-American starters after reaching the NCAA Tournament finals last season. Loyola ended last season winning a share of the MIVA regular season title but was upset in the conference tournament quarterfinals. Preseason All-American pin-hitter Parker Van Buren finished last season was fifth in the nation averaging 4.13 kills per game and was second in the MIVA hitting .338. Van Buren also was in the nation’s top 15 with a 0.45 aces per game average. Second-year head coach John Hawks in the offseason increased the Ramblers’ pin-hitter with the addition of outside attacker Daniel Fabikovic. Fabikovic was a member of the Czech Republic Boys’ Youth National Team and helped lead the country to a silver medal at the European Championships.
