George Mason outside dominant for Puerto Rico at NORCECA Final Four

An All-EIVA outside attacker finished with one of the top offensive performances at an international tournament.

Omar Hoyos had more than 20 kills in three matches for Puerto Rico and was seventh among all players with a 45.1 percent offensive efficiency at the NORCECA Men’s Final Four during the weekend in Mexico.

The George Mason senior committed a combined four errors throughout the tournament and had a .373 attack percentage as Puerto Rico finished in four-team event in third place. Hoyos also had 12 kills and zero errors while hitting .462 in the tournament opener against the Dominican Republic.

Along with the offensive performance, Hoyos was fifth at the tournament with 33 excellent service receptions and had a 94.1 percent successful passing rating.

Hoyos joined the Puerto Rican Men’s National Team after leading George Mason and being in the NCAA’s top 30 with a 3.58 kills per game average during the 2023 season. In addition, Hoyos had a career-best .284 attack percentage and helped George Mason reach the EIVA Tournament semifinals.

Mexico defeated Puerto Rico in five games in the tournament finale on Sunday to win the NORCECA Men’s Final Four and earn a berth to the 2023 FIVB Men’s Challenger Cup.
