An upset loss was not enough to move Long Beach State from No. 1 in the RPI.
The Beach continued to remain more than one-hundredth of a percentage point ahead of all teams in the latest RPI rankings that the NCAA released on Monday.
This is the third consecutive week Long Beach State is atop of the RPI rankings and comes days after it lost in five games to UC San Diego to end its seven-match winning streak. In addition, the Beach enters the final week of its regular season needing one more win to clinch the Big West regular season championship.
Penn State remains at No. 2 in the recent rankings, while UCLA jumped two spots to No. 3.
Ball State and USC also round out the top five of the RPI.
A team’s RPI ranking is calculated using a mathematical formula that includes its winning percentage, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule. The RPI also is one of the criteria categories the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field.
An updated RPI rankings will be released each Monday throughout the regular season and conference tournaments. The final RPI rankings before the seven-team NCAA Tournament will be unveiled on Selection Sunday.
