What to know: No. 6/7 UC Santa Barbara in order to extend its winning streak to 10 matches will have to find a way to slow down one of the top offenses in the nation. UC Santa Barbara will travel to No. 3/2 Long Beach State to open a home-and-home weekend conference series. The Beach enters this series fifth in the nation with a .342 attack percentage, including hitting more than .300 in each of its last two matches. Freshman outside attacker Alex Nikolov is in the nation’s top five averaging both 4.20 kills per game and 0.67 aces per game. Nikolov has two matches so far this season with more than 20 kills against teams currently ranked in the top 10. The freshman also had a season-high five aces in a non-conference sweep against Concordia-Irvine last week. Along with Nikolov, outside attacker Spencer Olivier is among the national leaders with a 3.12 kills per game average and has a career-best .329 attack percentage. UC Santa Barbara outside attacker Ryan Wilcox leads the team and is in the nation’s top 20 with a 3.58 kills per game average. In addition, UC Santa Barbara middle attacker Donovan Todorov is sixth in the country averaging 1.22 blocks per game and has at least three blocks in five matches during the Gauchos’ current winning streak. This series could also have significant bracketology implications at the end of the season. In the latest Off the Block bracketolgoy, UC Santa Barbara is first team out in the race for an at-large bid and Long Beach State is the No. 1 overall seed.
