The wait continues for the defending MIVA champions to start its season.

Lewis announced Wednesday it has canceled its non-conference road trip to Lincoln Memorial and King this weekend because of health and safety protocols within the program.

The Flyers have had their first three matches of the season canceled.

The team’s originally scheduled season opener was supposed to be against UC Irvine on Sunday. The Anteaters, though, opted out of that match because of the national surge in coronavirus cases with the Omicron variant.

The amount of daily new positive coronavirus cases has steadily increased since December throughout the United States, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nation’s seven-day average for daily new positive cases as of Tuesday has climbed to a record high of 554,328.

Lewis is now slated to open its season at home against the first-year program Maryville on Tuesday.

The Flyers finished last season repeating as MIVA champions and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Two starters return from that team who were named 2022 Preseason All-Americans – middle attacker Tyler Mitchem and setter Kevin Kauling.

Lincoln Memorial was preparing to play host to Lewis for the first time in its program history.

The Railsplitters in 2021 won their third consecutive IVA Tournament championship and ended ranked No. 10 in the Division II national coaches poll.

King also was receiving votes in the final Division II national coaches poll and advanced to the ConfCarolinas Tournament semifinals.

King remains scheduled to open its season against Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday. In addition, Lincoln Memorial will play Purdue Fort Wayne in its season opener on Saturday.
