What to know: Grand Canyon comes into the season with high expectations as their No. 9 preseason ranking is the program’s highest ever. The Lopes return all three starting pin hitters as well as their starting setter and libero. Outside attacker Camden Gianni was an All-American last year, while fellow outside Christian Janke and opposite Hugh Fischer received all-conference accolades. Gianni ranked the top five nationally last year with 0.698 aces per game and 4.96 points per game. The Lopes, who ranked No. 11 nationally in blocks per game, lost both of their starting middle attackers from a year ago. McKendree features five players from the state of Arizona including returning starting setter Ryan Serrano and returning starting outside attacker Patrick Ross. While Grand Canyon will certainly look to their offense to carry them, the Bearcats will look to their defense to lead the way. McKendree ranked in the top seven nationally last year with both 2.9 blocks per game and 9.81 digs per game. There is a big hole to fill for reigning MIVA coach of the year Nickie Sanlin’s club as the top blocker in the nation from last year, Lucas Galifos, was lost to graduation. In the back row, starting libero Francisco Comas had 2.19 digs per game last year, good for 13th nationally.
