What to know: In an opening week match between 2021 NCAA Tournament participants, these two teams come into the season from opposite directions in terms of returning players. Penn State returns all of their starters from a team that won the EIVA last year. BYU, who won the MPSF, lost four-time All-American opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez and two-time All-American setter Wil Stanley. In fact, the only two returning starters for the Cougars are two-time All-American outside attacker Davide Gardini and libero Mitchell Worthington. BYU will look to Gardini shoulder a heavy load, as he hit .327 last year with 3.05 kills per game. Like BYU, Penn State ranked in the top six in every major statistical category last year. In fact, the Nittany Lions were tops in the nation with 3.00 aces per game and a .364 attack percentage. Three All-Americans return for Penn State – opposite Cal Fisher, outside attacker Brett Wildman, and setter Cole Bogner.
