Shawn Patchell is continuing to schedule road non-conference matches against Hawai’i.

This time, though, the head coach will take a first-year program to face the defending NCAA champions.

Long Island as part of recently unveiling its inaugural season schedule announced it will play a two-match series versus Hawai’i on Feb. 9-11 in Honolulu.

The Sharks announced earlier this year that they would add a men’s volleyball program starting in 2022 and hired Patchell to lead the team. Patchell arrives to Long Island after guiding Concordia-Irvine to 118 victories in eight seasons as the head coach.

Concordia-Irvine under Patchell traveled to Hawai’i every season from 2018 to 2020 and went on 0-4 in those non-conference road matches.

Hawai’i is 28-3 in non-conference home matches since 2018.

The Rainbow Warriors return multiple starters from its national championship team, including setter Jakob Thelle. The 2021 Lloy Ball Award finalist was fifth in the nation with a 10.69 assists per game average and guided the Rainbow Warriors to a nation-best .360 attack percentage last season.

The series against Hawai’i will be part of a 10-match stretch from Jan. 25 to March 11 of consecutive road matches for Long Island. The team during this stretch also will play fellow first-year programs American International and Fairleigh Dickinson.

Long Island, which will compete as an independent in 2022, will open its inaugural season with home matches D’Youville on Jan. 15 and Saint Francis on Jan. 21.
