There won’t be a long wait or any travel for King to have a marque non-conference match in 2022
King as part of unveiling its 2022 regular season announced it will have a home non-conference against the defending MIVA champions Lewis during its opening weekend of the season.
Lewis ended last season reaching the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the second straight season and was ranked No. 4 in the national coaches poll. Despite multiple All-American starters graduating from the Flyers starting lineup, the team still returns All-American setter Kevin Kauling.
King overcame multiple injuries throughout the 2021 season to reach the ConfCarolinas Tournament semifinals. It also opened the season sweeping a two-match non-conference road series against Saint Francis.
Among the starters slated to return for the Tornado includes libero Noah Melendez who was named the ConfCarolinas Defensive Player of the Year.
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between King and Lewis and the third time in the series the Tornado will play host to the Flyers. Lewis is undefeated in the series and has not dropped a game to King since the inaugural meeting in 2011.
The match against Lewis on Jan. 8 will be the second of five non-conference home matches for King against MIVA teams during the 2022 season.
King will play Purdue Fort Wayne in its season opener on Jan. 7. In addition, it will face McKendree and Loyola in the opening month of the season and then play Quincy in March.
