What to know: Almost 20 months later the United States is back on the court. The United States will open its FIVB Volleyball Nations League schedule against Canada in its first match since the 2019 FIVB World Cup. While the United States did not play a match in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, it had multiple podium finishes in 2019. The United States won the silver medal at the most recent Volleyball Nations League and earned the bronze medal at the World Cup. It also won all three of its Olympic qualification matches in August 2019 to earn a berth to the Summer Games in Tokyo. The United States returns the majority of its starting lineup that won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics, including former Penn State opposite Matt Anderson. Anderson was second among all players with 50 combined kills in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League Finals. The opposite also had a match-high 20 kills to help the United States beat Brazil in the semifinals and advance to the gold-medal match. Canada in 2020 won the NORCECA qualification tournament to earn an Olympics berth. In addition, Canada upset the United States in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League with Timothy Maar Stephen having a team-high 15 kills.
