What to know: These two teams split their pair of regular season matches, with UCLA winning the match in Westwood in four games and Pepperdine winning the match in Malibu in four games. These teams were supposed to play a rubber match on March 31 but that was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns within the Pepperdine program. The winner of this match looks to be in the driver’s seat for at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament, if they don’t win the MPSF Tournament. UCLA secured a spot in the MPSF semifinals after defeating No. 7 seed Concordia-Irvine in four games without the services of two starters (outside attacker Austin Matautia and middle attacker Merrick McHenry). The Bruins attacked at a .425 clip and were led outside attacker Cole Ketrzynski’s 24 kills. UCLA will need to limit their errors in this match as 44 of Concordia-Irvine’s 92 points came of Bruin errors. Pepperdine advanced to semifinals with a four-game victory over No. 6 seed Stanford. The Waves used a balanced attack to secure the victory, led by MPSF All-First Team outside attacker Spencer Wickens’ 14 kills.

No. 1 seed BYU (17-3, 17-3 MPSF) vs. No. 4 seed Grand Canyon (9-10, 8-10 MPSF)

What to know: BYU had a bye into the semifinal round by virtue of winning the MPSF regular season title. Grand Canyon advanced out of the quarterfinal round by defeating No. 5 seed in four games. Like they did in the three regular season matches against the Trojans, the Lopes used their strong serve to secure victory on Thursday. Grand Canyon was led by MPSF Freshman of the Year Camden Gianni’s 24 kills on a .697 attack percentage. BYU took three of the four regular season matches between the two teams, including both in Provo. The Lopes forced the Cougars to go the distance in the second match in Provo, and took the first match in Phoenix in a sweep. That first match in Phoenix was highlighted by a 45-43 second set, the most points in a set this season. The teams rank 1-2 in blocks per game in the conference, while both in bottom ten nationally in digs per game. This match also features two of the three best servers in the conference, with Grand Canyon’s Gianni ranking first in aces per game and BYU’s Gabi Garcia Fernandez ranking third.

Long Beach State lost both matches they played in Manoa this year, including a five game loss to top-ranked Hawai’i on April 3. This will be UC Santa Barbara’s first match on the islands since 2019. This is a match of contrasting strengths on the defensive side with Long Beach State coming in as the conference’s best blocking team while UC Santa Barbara is the conference’s best digging team.
