There wasn’t much surprise to Hawai’i and BYU being atop the inaugural RPI rankings.

The same can’t be said for the team at No. 3.

Ohio State was ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball RPI rankings that the NCAA released on Monday.

The Buckeyes (8-8, 7-5 MIVA) are tied for fourth place in the MIVA entering the final week of the regular season. In a season with limited non-conference matches because of the coronavirus pandemic, though, Ohio State benefited in the RPI from having four non-conference matches to open the season against Penn State (16-2, 13-1 EIVA).

A team’s RPI ranking is calculated using a mathematical formula that includes its winning percentage, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule.

The RPI also is one of the criteria categories the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field.

Lewis and Penn State join Hawai’i, BYU and Ohio State to round-out the top five of the RPI rankings.

An updated RPI rankings will be released each Monday throughout the regular season and conference tournaments. The final RPI rankings before the seven-team NCAA Tournament will be unveiled on Selection Sunday
