What to know: UCLA and Grand Canyon open their seasons in a highly anticipated early season matchup featuring two teams ranked in the nation’s top 10. The Lopes enter the match with their highest preseason ranking ever, No. 10 in both the media poll and the coaches poll. Grand Canyon returns plenty of firepower at the outside hitting position with returning MPSF Freshman of the Year Camden Gianni and All-MPSF Second-Teamer Christian Janke. Gianni led all MPSF in kills and points in the abbreviated 2020 season. In addition, the Lopes return starters at setter (Hunter Hughes), middle blocker Ian McLain, Libero Cole Udall and opposite Huge Fischer. For the Bruins, they enter the season No. 9 in the polls and will need to find replacements for three starters from the 2020 team. Daenen Gyimah, a three-time Ryan Millar Award winner as the nation’s top middle blocker, and Matthew Younggren have graduated and ended their college careers. Starting setter Mads Kyed Jensen turned pro after his freshman year, signing a contract with Verona in Italy. However, the Bruins still return plenty of production on the pins led by Austin Matautia, Alex Knight, and Cole Ketrzynski, who was named a Freshman All-American.
