One of the best players at the most recent USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships has committed to BYU.

Coach Shawn Olmstead earlier this week announced that high school senior Luke Benson has signed a scholarship with the Cougars and will join the team for the 2022 season.

Benson, a 6-foot-7 outside attacker from Newbury Park, California, was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2019 Boys’ Junior National Championships. With his high school team, Benson was selected as the 2019 All-Area Player of the Year and was named the conference’s most valuable player in 2019.

“We’ve known Luke from a very young age and have had him on our radar for a long, long time. Luke’s physicality above the net will be a tremendous addition to our team,” Olmstead said in a statement. “His life revolves around volleyball and that energy and attitude will constantly drive his improvement. Cougar fans will really enjoy his effort and enthusiasm in the Smith Fieldhouse.”

BYU concluded the shortened 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic ranked No. 1 in both the national coaches poll and national media poll. The Cougars also return a majority of starters for the upcoming season, including the National Player of the Year opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez.
