What to know: No matter what poll you’re looking at it’s No. 1 versus No. 2. Both teams come into this matchup undefeated. BYU is the nation’s top blocking team with 3.009 blocks per game average and with the nation’s No. 3 attack percentage at .351. On the other side of the net, Hawai’i ranks either No. 1 or No. 2 in all major statistical categories, except for digs per game average. The Rainbow Warriors rank tops in the nation with a .386 attack percentage, 13.84 kills per game average, and a .171 opponent attack percentage. Two individual matchups to watch are at opposite and middle attacker. BYU opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez leads the nation with 0.849 aces per game average and is in the country’s top 15 with a 3.96 kills per game average. Hawai’i opposite Rado Parapunov is fourth nationally with a 4.35 kills per game average. At middle attacker, the Rainbow Warriors are led by redshirt senior Patrick Gasman, who ranks No. 4 in the nation with a 1.324 blocks per game average. Not far behind him is BYU middle attacker Felipe de Brito Ferreira, who ranks seventh nationally with a 1.282 blocks per game average. A question that looms at outset of this two-match series is rust for both teams. BYU has lost on set since its series against No. 3/3 UC Santa Barbara early February. The Cougars have left Provo, Utah, once in the last five weekends. Hawai’i hasn’t played a competitive match since it visited Stanford on Feb. 14-15. BYU is No. 3 in the nation in terms of strength of schedule, while Hawai’i is No. 24. BYU holds a 41-19 lead in the all-time series, with only a 15-14 lead in matches at Hawai’i. The Rainbow Warriors swept their match last year inProvo, but the Cougars won the 2018 match in Honolulu in four games.
