Last year, Cole Pender played libero for No. 8/8 UCLA, but this year he has been pressed into the starting rotation as an outside attacker. He had an inconsistent performance in his first start on Friday in the Bruins’ four game victory over Concordia-Irvine, but bounced back in Sunday’s victory over crosstown foe USC. Pender had a strong all-around performance with eight kills, four digs, and three digs on Sunday, but most importantly for the Bruins he helped them neutralize USC’s service game. The Trojans had four aces in the first game and none in final three games. Check out his postmatch interview with associate editor Jonathan Bates.
