UC San Diego jumped to No. 3 in the latest Division II coaches poll released on Tuesday.
The Tritons defeated a ranked team for the second time this season when they defeated UCLA last Friday. This was the first win over UCLA for UC San Diego in the John Speraw era.
The Tritons outhit the Bruins, . 360 to .179, led by Kyle McCauley’s 13 kills and Wyatt Harrison’s 11.
No. 1 Lewis maintained their grip on the top spot in the poll despite losing to Hawai’i in four games and Penn State in a reverse sweep. No. 2 McKendree went 2-0 last week after defeating NJIT in #CincoSets and sweeping Saint Francis.
No. 4 Concordia-Irvine swept USC, while No. 5 Lindenwood split with Saint Francis and NJIT. Barton and King round out the poll at No. 6 and No. 7 respectively. Lincoln Memorial, Charleston, and Mount Olive also received votes.
This week is full of head-to-head Division II matches with 18 such matches on the docket. Featured among these matches are No. 3 UC San Diego taking on both No. 2 McKendree and No. 5 Lindenwood. Also, eight of those matches are the first ConfCarolinas matches of the year.
Both NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II men’s volleyball programs compete for the same national championship. The AVCA National Coaches Poll ranks the top 15 Division I-II men’s volleyball teams and is released each Monday during the regular season.
A national voting committee comprised of coaches from the more than 20 Division II teams determines the weekly rankings for the Division II National Coaches Poll.
