What to know: Coach Mark Pavlik was quick to praise his team’s passing after not allowing an ace in its five-game upset victory No. 7/7 Lewis last week. Penn State will now face possibly its best serve reception challenge of the season as it plays host to No. 6/6 UCLA at the Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge. UCLA leads the nation with a 2.43 aces per game average, including having 10 aces in a road victory versus Princeton earlier this month. The Bruins, though, had 35 service errors in that five-game match and have at least 20 service errors in three of their first four matches. In addition, UCLA is coming off of a three-game upset loss to UC San Diego on Saturday when it was without Preseason All-American middle attacker Daenan Gyimah. Gyimah is in the nation’s top five with a .462 attack percentage and has double-digit kills in his last two matches. Outside attacker Brett Wildman leads the Nittany Lions and is in the country’s top 20 averaging 3.64 kills per game. Wildman also has the most serve receptions on the team and a .925 percent reception efficiency. Along with Wildman, libero Will Bantle has a .944 percent reception efficiency and is eighth in the nation with a 2.57 digs per game average. UCLA is on an eight-match winning streak against Penn State dating back more than a decade and has never lost to Penn State at Rec Hall.

What to know: There was just no slowing down opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez in the non-conference series opener between No. 2/2 BYU and No. 5/5 UC Irvine. Fernandez enters the series finale after having a match-high 19 kills on a .517 attack percentage as the Cougars defeated the Anteaters in four games on Wednesday. The opposite is sixth in the nation with a 4.21 kills per game average and has at least 15 kills in three of the team’s seven matches this season. In addition, Fernandez had three aces in the victory against UC Irvine and has a nation-best 1.00 aces per game average. UC Irvine opposite Alexandre Nsakanda in the series-opening loss finished with a team-high 15 kills while hitting .342. Nsakanda has double-digit kills in every match this season and already has as many double-digit kill performances this season than he did all of last season.
