Two of the top players in college men’s volleyball will represent the United States at an upcoming international tournament.
USA Volleyball announced Wednesday that Loyola setter Garrett Zolg and Hawai’i middle attacker Patrick Gasman were selected to country’s 14-player roster for the upcoming NORCECA Championship Cup.
Both Zolg and Gasman join the United States following All-American seasons and are the only active college men’s volleyball players on the team.
Zolg finished last season second in the nation with a 10.86 assists per game average and guided the Ramblers offense to the country’s 10th-best attack at .306. In addition, the First-Team All-MIVA selection and All-American honorable mention helped lead Loyola to the MIVA Tournament finals.
This is the second international event during the summer with Zolg on the U.S. roster. The setter played for the United States at the World University Games in July.
Gasman was the 2019 Off the Block National Blocker of the Year and concluded the season second in the country averaging 1.42 blocks per game. The All-American middle attacker also had career-best .463 attack percentage as Hawai’i won the Big West championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament finals.
Along with Zolg and Gasman, the U.S. roster features 12 former NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players.
Both Lewis and Pepperdine led all schools with two former players making the team. In addition, Long Beach State, Ohio State, Princeton, Sacred Heart, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and USC each have an alumni on the roster.
The NORCECA Championship Cup will begin Aug. 22 at the U.S. Olympic Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The United States under Grand Canyon coach Matt Werle will face Puerto Rico, Cuba and Canada in the pool-play stage of the tournament.
