A Stanford libero is preparing to compete in one of the most prestigious international tournaments this summer.

Volleyball Canada recently announced that Justin Lui was selected to the Canadian Men’s Junior National Team preliminary roster for the upcoming FIVB U21 World Championship.

Lui is slated to return to Stanford for his freshman season in 2020 after redshirting with the Cardinal last season

The libero spent last year playing for Canada and helping the country win the bronze medal at the NORCECA U21 Continential Championship. In addition, Lui led Canada and was in the tournament’s top five with 3.10 digs per game average.

Lui was one of two liberos to make the Canadian 17-player preliminary roster. The team’s final World Championship roster will be reduced to 12 players following its training session this month.

Canada earned an at-large bid to the World Championship because of its No. 8 ranking in the FIVB World Ranking. The five teams with the highest world rankings that do not qualify through their regional tournaments receive at-large bids to the 16-team tournament field.

Canada will open the World Championship, which begins July 18 in Bahrain, with pool-play matches against Poland, Brazil and Italy. The top-two teams from this pool will advance to the second round.

This is the sixth consecutive appearance for Canada in the World Championship. Canada most recently had back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the bi-annual international tournament.
