Almost 20 percent of all NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball programs finished the 2018-19 school year with at least 3.30 cumulative team grade point average.

Eight teams were named recipients earlier this week of the annual AVCA Team Academic Award.

The academic honor started in 1993 and is presented to college and high school volleyball teams that maintain at least 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 grade point average on a 5.0 scale. A record 1,126 teams across all divisions were recipients of the award this year.

The ConfCarolinas led all conferences with three teams — Barton, Belmont Abbey and Mount Olive — earning the Team Academic Award.

The defending ConfCarolinas champions Barton were one of the two schools to receive the academic accolade and reach the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Hawai’i also received the honor to cap off a season that included a postseason run to the NCAA Tournament finals.

Along with these schools, Ball State, Harvard, Loyola and St. Francis all were recipients of academic honor.

This is the sixth consecutive year that at least five NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams have received the Team Academic Award.

A combined 19 men’s volleyball programs in NCAA Division I-II, NCAA Division III and NAIA were selected for the honor this year. In addition, Barton, Dordt, Greenville, Stevens and Vassar made the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll for having the top-five grade point averages in college men’s volleyball.
