For the second straight season, Pepperdine outside attacker David Wieczorek was named MPSF Player of the Year last Thursday afternoon.
He is fourth player to repeat, joining the likes of Taylor Sander, George Roumain, and Jeff Nygaard. This is also Pepperdine’s eighth MPSF Player of the Year selection all time.
He was named both a conference and national Player of the Week on February 11, after hitting a combined .571 (26-2-42) through wins over Stanford and BYU. His leads the Waves with a .372 attack percentage, 3.84 kills per game, and 0.43 aces per game. That .372 attack percentage is second in the conference to UCLA’s Daenen Gyimah, and third in the nation among outside attackers (Stijn van Tilburg, TJ DeFalco). His 3.84 kills per game and 0.43 aces per game also rank second in the conference.
With the assistance of Wieczorek’s combined 31 kills on a .659 attack percentage in the final two matches, Pepperdine finished first in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. They will host the tournament’s semifinal and final rounds as the No. 1 seed in the MPSF Tournament this weekend.
The Waves rank tops in the conference with 12.58 assists per game, 9.22 digs per game, a .343 attack percentage, and 13.47 kills per game.
Wieczorek was also named to the All-MPSF First-Team, his fourth time being selected with all-conference honors. Every player named to the All-MPSF First-Team is a repeat winner, while the only freshman named to an All-MPSF first or second team was Freshman of the Year, Davide Gardini from BYU.
The awards were voted on by a committee of conference head coaches.
The MPSF coach of the year will be named after the NCAA Tournament concludes.
