What to know: While No. 3/3 UC Irvine looks to be the clear favorites headed into this weekend’s double-header against No. 10/10 BYU has always proven to be a tough foe to beat at home. For the Anteaters, who are coming off a pair of brutal losses to Hawaii, history shows that they’re liking to leave Provo unscathed. BYU is 6-0 at home, while they are 1-5 on the road. The Cougars are 24-7 against the Anteaters in program history when playing at home. Both teams split the last time they battled each other in Provo in 2017. Additionally BYU has not loss in back-to-back games at home since 2015 – which happened to be against then-top-ranked UC Irvine. In the process, the ‘Eaters snapped the Cougars’ 36-match home win streak. BYU is currently 0-2 against top-five ranked teams this season, but both of those losses came on the road. The ‘Eaters are currently seventh in the nation averaging 13 kills per set and ninth in hitting percentage at .318. BYU comes in at 12th with a .311 clip. UC Irvine is coming into this match looking to rebound after hitting back-to-back season lows in a pair of home losses to Hawaii. David Gardini, who on Monday was named Off the Block National Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, is averaging 3.26 kills per game on a .357 hitting percentage. Gardini recently notched a season-high 22 kills on a .515 hitting percentage in a five-set win over Stanford at home. Joel Schneidmiller leads the ‘Eaters with a 3.58 kills per game average at a .305 clip and also paces the team with 32 aces. Schneidmiller was critical for the ‘Eater’s wins over the Cougars last season as he recorded 34 kills on a .494 clip over their two games.
