While the season has just started, Cal State Northridge may have already pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year as the No. 12 Matadors toppled No. 2 UCLA 3-0, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23, in their home opener at the Matadome Wednesday night.
The Matadors were led by junior Ksawery Tomsia, who had a match-high 12 kills on an efficient .429 hitting percentage. Tomsia also chipped in four digs and five blocks in the effort. Senior Dimitar Kalchev added 8 kills while hitting for a red-hot .500 and added five digs and two aces. Redshirt freshman Taylor Ittner quarterbacked CSUN to a .417 hitting percentage, more than double the Bruin’s clip of .200.
The Bruins were led by redshirt junior opposite Brandon Rattray who registered nine kills. Senior outside hitter Dylan Missry and junior middle blocker Daenan Gyimah each added seven kills apiece.
Both teams return on action on Friday, with CSUN concluding its homestand against UC Merced while UCLA looks to bounce back against McKendree in Illinois.
