What to know: For both UC Irvine and Pepperdine, tonight’s match will feature the highest-ranked opponent that either team has faced thus far this season. The two teams split a pair of non-conference matches last year, with each team coincidentally registering a .281 hitting percentage in their wins. Karl Apfelbach anchored the Anteater offense in both matches with 19 and 17 kills respectively. The Waves will look to replace the production of Alex Harthraller and Colbi Harriman who accounted for 55 of their 104 kills over two games. Returning MPSF Player of the Year David Wieczorek did not see action during Pepperdine’s loss to UC Irvine, but posted a match-high 19 kills to even the season series the second time around. The Anteaters have looked a bit inconsistent in the past two weeks, dropping matches to Stanford and an unranked USC team. The Waves, on the other hand, have remained steady, with their only blemish a five-game loss to Loyola-Chicago. Joel Schneidmiller currently leads the Eaters with 144 kills, with Apfelbach being the next closest with 102 kills. Scott Stadick leads the team with 47 blocks. Wieczorek, Michael Wexter and Kaleb Denmark spearhead the Waves offense with a more balanced distribution 89, 77 and 71 kills respectively. Kevin Vaz leads the Waves in blocks with 25 total at an average of 1.09 per game.
