A record number of college men’s volleyball programs have earned a national accolade for their academic achievements.

The AVCA announced on Monday that 14 NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award.

The Team Academic Award began in 1993 and honors academic excellence among college and high school volleyball teams. In order to be eligible for this annual award, a team needs at least a cumulative 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or at least a 4.10 grade point average on a 5.0 scale.

This mark of 14 teams tied the single-year record set last year.

The MIVA led all conferences of six of its eight members receiving this academic honor. In addition, Team Academic Award recipients featured four ConfCarolinas teams, two EIVA teams and two independent programs.

Ohio State and King were the only schools to earn both the Team Academic Award and make the seven-team NCAA Tournament in 2018.

Along with this academic award, Barton, Harvard and St. Francis were named to the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes the teams with the top-five grade point averages in all collegiate men’s volleyball.

NCAA Division III programs Vassar and MIT also made the honor roll.

A record 973 college and high school team received the Team Academic Award this year. Among this record-setting number included 24 college men’s volleyball teams and 28 high school boys’ volleyball teams.
