Pepperdine outside Wieczorek named 2018 MPSF Player of Year

Outside attacker David Wieczorek capped off the regular season becoming the first Pepperdine player in almost a decade to win the conference’s top individual honor.

The MPSF announced Thursday that Wieczorek was selected as the 2018 MPSF Player of the Year.

Wieczorek was second in the conference and in the nation’s top 10 with a 3.94 kills per game average, including having at least 15 kills in seven MPSF matches. In addition, the junior was eighth in the conference and had the best attack percentage among MPSF pin-hitters at .358.

Wieczorek also had a MPSF-best 0.59 aces per game average as he helped the Waves finish in third place and earn the No. 3 seed for the upcoming MPSF Tournament.

This is the first time a Wave won the MPSF Player of the Year since former All-American opposite Paul Carroll in 2009. Wieczorek becomes the sixth player in Pepperdine’s program history to earn the conference honor.

BYU opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez earned the other top individual conference award winning the 2018 MPSF Freshman of the Year.

The MPSF regular season champions BYU had three players earn All-MPSF First-Team honors. UCLA led all teams with four first-team selections and had two more players make the All-MPSF Second-Team.
