Long Beach State atop season’s first RPI rankings

Make it now three rankings with Long Beach State in the top spot.

The 49ers were ranked No. 1 in the season’s inaugural RPI rankings that was released Monday.

Long Beach State is the only undefeated team left in the nation and is the unamimous No. 1 in both the national coaches poll and national media poll.

Along with Long Beach State, UCLA, BYU, Loyola and UC Irvine round out the top five of the initial RPI rankings.

The RPI is one of the criteria categories the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field. A team’s RPI ranking is calculated using a mathematical formula that includes a team’s winning prercentage, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule.

The updated RPI rankings will be released each Monday throughout the rest of the regular season and conference tournaments. In addition, the final RPI rankings before the NCAA Tournament will be released on Selection Sunday, April 22.
