What to know: One of the top rivalries in the state of Indiana will get renewed once again days after No. 11 Ball State pulled off a road comeback victory in the series opener. Ball State will play host to No. 15/10 Fort Wayne to conclude their home-and-home conference series and with the Cardinals needing a victory to remain in serious contention for a MIVA regular season championship. The I-69 Rivalry between the Cardinals and Mastodons was named of the top 10 Indiana sporting events in rankings from The News-Sentinel. The Cardinals in the series opener rallied from a one-game deficit to beat the Mastodons in five games on Wednesday. Ball State, which has not win a MIVA regular season title since 2002, is now within one match of first place in the MIVA. Middle attacker Matt Walsh finished with a match-high nine blocks along with 11 kills on a .476 attack percentage against the Mastodons. The 2017 finalist for the Ryan Millar Award entered this weekend in the nation’s top 10 with both a 1.16 blocks per game average and a .396 attack percentage. The Cardinals also had a conference season-high 15 blocks against the Mastodons and are 5-2 when they finish with double-digit blocks in matches this season. Despite the rivalry loss, outside attacker Pelegrín Vargas led all players with a season-high 24 kills and hit .326. Vargas enters the rivalry rematch second in the MIVA and 10th in the nation averaging 3.78 kills per game. Fort Wayne, though, is on a five-match losing streak against its in-state rivals dating back to 2016.
