What to know: No. 8/7 Pepperdine already has a knack this season for beating top-five ranked teams. It will now have to try to pull off an upset in one of the most difficult environments for a road team. Pepperdine will travel to Smith Fieldhouse to play No. 5/5 BYU and with a win can move within a match of the first-place Cougars in the MPSF standings. The Waves enter this conference match on a five-match winning streak that has featured the team getting upset victories against No. 3/3 UCLA and No. 4/4 UC Irvine. Robert Mullahey also was named the Off the Block/Molten National Setter of the Week and the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week after guiding Pepperdine to a season-high .455 attack percentage in its sweep against UCLA on Friday. BYU is on a seven-match winning streak, including five straight victories to open its MPSF season. In addition, the Cougars are second in the nation with a 2.86 blocks per game average. BYU middle attacker Price Jarman leads the MPSF and is third in the nation averaging 1.27 blocks per game. The All-American also has at least five blocks in seven straight matches, including a combined 14 blocks in two MPSF victories against Stanford last week. Along with the front-row defense, this match will feature two of the top outside attackers in the nation. Pepperdine outside attacker David Wieczorek is averaging a MPSF-best 3.89 kills per game and has double-digit kills in every match he has played this season. The National Player of the Week also had a season-high four aces against UCLA and multiple aces six matches. BYU All-American outside attacker Brenden Sander is among the MPSF and national leaders with a 3.43 kills per game average. Similar to Wieczorek, the senior has multiple aces in six matches this season.
