What to know: Two of the top MIVA players who spent the offseason playing for their country’s men’s national team will now go up against each other in a conference match as No. 6/6 Loyola travels to No. 14 Fort Wayne. Loyola All-American middle attacker Jeff Jendryk is third in the nation with a .481 attack percentage, including having eight kills and zero errors while hitting .667 in a sweep against Lindenwood on Saturday. In addition, the 2017 finalist for the Ryan Millar Award has double-digit kills three times during the Ramblers’ current seven-match winning streak. Jendryk returned for his senior season after helping the United States reach the FIVB World League Finals and was among the team leaders with a .621 attack percentage. Fort Wayne All-MIVA outside attacker Pelegrin Vargas competed with the Puerto Rican Men’s National Team in the summer following his freshman season and helped his country win the silver medal at the 2017 NORCECA Pan American Cup. Vargas as a sophomore is second in the MIVA and in the nation’s top 10 averaging 3.66 kills per game. He also has double-digit kills in all but two matches this season. However, Vargas was held to a season-low eight kills in a three-game road loss to No. 5/5 Ohio State last week. Along with Vargas, freshman middle attacker and Chilean Men’s National Team member Tomas Gago is third in the nation with a 1.34 blocks per game average. Fort Wayne opened the season winning eight straight matches for its best start in more than a decade. The team since then has lost two of its last three matches with both losses coming against top-10 ranked teams. In addition, the Mastodons are on a 10-match losing streak against the Ramblers dating back to 2013.
