What to know: Two of the top freshmen from last season will finally face each other as No. 6 Lewis opens its season against No. 7 UC Irvine at a BYU non-conference event. Both Lewis outside attacker Ryan Coenen and UC Irvine middle attacker Scott Stadick made the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshmen All-American Team last season and were selected as 2018 Preseason All-Americans. Coenen, the 2017 AVCA National Newcomer of the Year, finished last season in the nation’s top 30 with a 3.20 kills per game average. He also had double-digit kills in every match he played against a West Coast team. Stadick, the 2017 MPSF Freshman of the Year, was in the nation’s top six with both a 1.19 blocks per game average and a .421 attack percentage. In addition, Stadick spent the offseason playing with the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team and ended FIVB U21 World Championship in the tournament’s top 10 averaging 0.64 blocks per game. Lewis returners four Preseason All-MIVA starters after the team last season won at least 20 matches for the sixth time in the last seven years. Matt Yoshimoto returns for his second season as the starting setter after guiding the Lewis offense to be in the nation’s top 10 with a .308 attack percentage. Yoshimoto also spent the offseason training with the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team. UC Irvine outside attacker Aaron Koubi missed the first half of the 2017 season with an injury, but he returned to the court and had a 3.05 kills per game average as the Anteaters reached the MPSF Tournament semifinals. Despite Stadick and Koubi returning, UC Irvine is trying to replace both All-American setter Michael Saeta and All-American opposite Tamir Hershko, who concluded their college careers last season. This will be the third time in the last four years that Lewis and UC Irvine have meet in non-conference play. The Flyers swept the Anteaters in their 2015 season opener and ended that year reaching the NCAA Tournament finals.
