The preliminary roster has been whittled following a two-week training camp and the United States has its team for the upcoming FIVB U19 World Championship.
USA Volleyball announced during the weekend the 12-player U.S. team comprised of high school players and incoming college freshmen that will compete at the international tournament in Bahrain.
“We are very excited about this team and its potential,” coach Sam Shweisky said in a statement. “We have assembled a great mix of guys who have international experience as well as some new guys are bring a nice balance of ball control and physicality. The team is really bonding at a very fast rate and getting excited to go overseas and represent USA Volleyball.”
Shweisky and his coaching staff selected the U.S. roster from a group of 23 players who participated in the team’s training camp in Lake Placid, New York.
USC leads all schools with three commits and incoming recruits making the final U.S. roster. In addition, UC Irvine and Stanford each had multiple players and commits earn a roster spot.
Along with these schools, Charleston, Loyola and Ohio State each had an incoming recruit or commit selected to the team.
The United States will begin World Championship on Friday with its first of four pool-play matches.
The top four teams in the five-team pool will advance to the Round of 16. The United States at No. 7 in the world rankings is the highest ranked team in its poll.
The United States qualified for the World Championship after winning the silver medal at the 2016 NORCECA U19 Continental Championship. In addition, several players for the current U.S. team played for the Boys’ Youth National Team that finished 7-1 at the recent USA Volleyball High Performance Championships.
