The Buzz: Reaction on Twitter to BYU’s epic win vs. Long Beach State

No. 1/2 Long Beach State and No. 3/3 BYU lived up and even surpassed all the hype surround the match.

BYU extended the nation’s longest winning streak and moved into first place in the MPSF as it beat Long Beach State 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15 on Friday at Smith Fieldhouse to open their two-match home series.

All-American outside attacker Jake Langlois had a team-high 20 kills on a .341 attack percentage, including the match-winning kill in the fifth-game overtime. In addition, opposite Tim Dobbert added 12 kills, five blocks and a career-high 16 digs.

Dobbert started in place of All-American opposite Ben Patch, who did not start for the 12th consecutive matches because of an injury. The Cougars (21-2, 14-1 MPSF) at match-point in the decisive fifth game though, inserted Patch into the match for a few plays, and he even had an attack attempt during a rally that the 49ers won to force overtime.

All-American outside attacker TJ DeFalco in the loss finished with a match-high 25 kills on a .340 attack percentage and led the 49ers (21-3, 14-2 MPSF) with 14 digs.

With this victory, BYU now has a half-match lead against second-place Long Beach State entering the series finale on Saturday.
