What to know: No. 11 Ball State has one of the best records in the nation and now has an opportunity to get a signature win and first victory this season against a top-10 nationally ranked team. Ball State opens a two-match road trip as it travels to play No. 6/6 Lewis in a match-up between two of the top blocking teams in the nation. The Cardinals are third in the nation with a 2.56 blocks per game average, while the Flyers are sixth in the nation averaging 2.42 blocks per game. All-conference middle attacker Matt Walsh is also third in the nation with a 1.20 blocks per game average, including having six blocks in Ball State’s five-game win against Fort Wayne last week. That victory extended the Cardinals’ winning streak to three matches, and they have won nine of their last 10 matches. However, Ball State has lost its last seven road matches at Lewis with its last victory in Romeoville, Illinois, occurring in 2010. Lewis rallied from a two-game deficit to beat McKendree last week and remain within one match out of first place in the MIVA. Preseason All-American opposite Mitch Perinar had a match-high 21 kills on a .486 attack percentage in the comeback victory. This was the fourth time this season that Perinar had at least 20 kills in a match. The sophomore also is in the top five in the MIVA with both a 3.69 kills per game average and a .347 attack percentage. Perninar is one of the two players in this match-up who are among the conference in kills. Ball State freshman outside attacker Matt Szews is fourth in the MIVA averaging 3.55 kills per game average. Szews also has double-digit kills, at least a .300 attack percentage and an ace in five straight matches.

Opposite Robert Poole has a conference-best 3.83 kills per game average and double-digit kills in two matches versus nationally ranked teams this season. Poole also earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors after having a combined 39 kills on a .391 attack percentage in victories against North Greenville and Limestone last week. King outside attacker Jeff Sprayberry is fifth in the conference with a 3.22 kills per game average, including a season-high 18 kills in a five-game victory against Emmanuel last week.
