What to know: The two teams that met in the most dramatic match at the NCAA Tournament last year will now meet again in the opening weekend of the 2017 season as the top two ranked teams in the nation. No. 1 Ohio State will play host to No. 2 UCLA to conclude the AVCA Showcase. The Buckeyes en route to their NCAA title last season overcame a match-point to beat the Bruins in a fifth-game overtime in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Both teams returned a majority of their starters and are undefeated entering this early-season non-conference match. All-American opposite Miles Johnson had a match-high 15 kills on a .333 attack percentage as Ohio State rallied to beat USC in four games on Friday. In addition, Johnson finished with a match-high 20 kills in the Buckeyes’ 2016 NCAA Tournament semifinal victory. The Bruins enter this final match of their season-opening Midwest road trip not only undefeated but have yet to lose a game. UCLA swept No. 11 Loyola in its season opener on Tuesday and then swept No. 13 Penn State at the AVCA Showcase on Friday. The Bruins also hit more than .300 in both matches. In addition, freshman middle attacker Daenan Gyimah had both a match-high 10 kills on a .500 attack percentage and five blocks in the victory against the Nittany Lions. The Bruins last season had a four-game victory win versus the Buckeyes and finished the year undefeated in non-conference play.
